Casa Santos Lima has been a family owned company for several generations and was founded by Joaquim Santos Lima who, by the turn of 19th century, was one of the greatest producers and exporters. Over the years, the winery has benefited from numerous improvements and the introduction of most advanced technologies.

The area is deeply intertwined with the River Douro, with many steep slopes along the river banks where vines are planted in poor, schistous soils. Quinta de Porrais consists of 16 hectares of vineyards where old, low-yielding indigenous grapes of Douro are planted. By the unusually high altitude of the vineyards at about 600m above sea level, grapes are harvested at their maximum flavour and fine acidity. Dozens of the traditional grape varietals tend to be mixed together to produce rich-bodied and intense wines, namely Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão,
